GALESBURG, Illinois - The Knox College women's basketball team defeated Grinnell 63-51 in a conference matchup on Wednesday night.
It was a close game in the first quarter and into the second quarter as well, Grinnell held a 17-14 lead after the first period, but Knox heated up from there and ran away with the game. Towards the end of the fourth quarter the Pioneers fought back, but it was too late at that point.
The leading scorer for Knox was Sophie Elstone with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting, a nearly perfect effort. The two other standout performers were Kylee Callahan with 13 points and Catessa Duran with 12 points. Kristin Herndon also grabbed 11 rebounds.
"The team was playing on all cylinders tonight," said head coach Kira Mowen. "I was happy that we could get some subs into the game and rely on some quality minutes off the bench. Grinnell is a really well coached team and Erin Lillis is one of the best guards in our conference. I thought our team did a tremendous job of knowing where she was at and keeping her from easy looks. We are focused now on Monmouth this weekend at home. It is alumni day and if you're in the area the support would be great for our young women."
The Prairie Fire's next game will be this coming Saturday against their arch rivals Monmouth College, it will surely be a good one as the rivalry always sparks great passion in the games.
