Baseball Earns Sweep in Home Openers

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of the University of Health Sciences and Pharmacy of St. Louis on Sunday afternoon.

Knox scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first in game one to take an early lead. The Prairie Fire added four more in the fourth inning thanks to a home-run by Joe Williams for his first collegiate hit.

Knox added another run in the fifth inning and then scored three in the eighth to earn a 10-0 victory in game one.

Brandon Ward gave up five hits in 5.1 innings while racking up 11 strikeouts to pick up the win on the mound.

In game two, the Prairie Fire struck first again with two runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Eutectics plated a run in the third, but Knox responded with two more in the bottom half. The Prairie Fire tacked on three more runs in the fifth and then worked around some jams in the eighth and ninth to win game two 7-4.

Caleb Hay picked up the victory on the bump for Knox throwing six innings and allowing just three hits. He struck out four.

Evan Laws led the Prairie Fire with five hits on the day. Jason Clark and Braden Ogden added three hits apiece. Williams, Ogden, Clark, and Cole Shepherd each hit home-runs. Troy Brandt added a triple. Ogden racked up four RBI.

"Our pitching was lights out today," said associate head coach James Clark. "Brandon and Caleb have put in a ton of work and it is showing right now with their performances. It was also nice to see our hitting break out today with some big hits."

Knox will return to action on March 14 as they open up their spring break trip in Florida.
