GRINNELL, Iowa - The Prairie Fire women's basketball team dropped a 97-91 Midwest Conference game to Grinnell in overtime on Tuesday night.
Knox took an early 12-4 lead in the first quarter, but the Pioneers scored 17 of the next 24 points to take a 21-19 lead into the second period.
The Prairie Fire tied the game at 21-21 to begin the second quarter and after some back and forth took a narrow 48-46 advantage into halftime.
The teams exchanged leads through much of the third quarter, but Knox pulled away to a 64-58 lead entering the final period.
Grinnell chipped away at the lead throughout the fourth quarter, but the Prairie Fire still led by four with 40 seconds left. The Pioneers hit a trey to pull within one and then tied the game with nine seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime.
Knox took an 89-88 lead with just over a minute left in overtime, but Grinnell turned around and took the lead on their next possession. The Pioneers then hit 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Bria Medina led Knox with 31 points and added seven rebounds. Sarina Dacio poured in 20 points hitting 5-of-9 from long-range. Loraya Rocha tallied 15 points and pulled down nine boards.
"We played very well in the second half, but Grinnell got hot in the last 40 seconds and then in the last minute of overtime," said Seth McDowell. "They are a tough team and now we'll have to get back to work for Monmouth this weekend."
The Prairie Fire will return to action on January 27 as they travel to Monmouth for the rivalry matchup.
