Women Open Conference Play with 2-0 Loss at Grinnell

The Prairie Fire were stymied by the Pioneers’ defensive effort

GRINNELL, Iowa — The Knox College women's soccer team played its Midwest Conference opener this afternoon at Grinnell's Springer Field, and the host Pioneers scored a goal in each half to hand the Prairie Fire (1-8, 0-1 MWC) a 2-0 defeat.

Grinnell (4-3-1, 1-1 MWC), which had suffered a 4-0 loss in its first league game this past weekend against Lake Forest, made sure its did not suffer a similar fate against Knox, scoring its first goal in the 15th minute. Campbell Swaim sent a cross into the box from left of the goal, finding Rama Joshi front and center, and she did not miss her opportunity to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead.

The second goal was almost by accident as Ramona Delbourne drilled a hard cross into the box from the right of the goal. Her teammate, Maya Mozena stuck her foot into the path of the ball, which popped up high into the air and over the outstretched hands of the Prairie Fire's first-year keeper, Darby Wallig, just below the crossbar and inside the left post.

  • Grinnell outshot Knox by a 15-3 margin, 6-1 on goal, with senior Aleene Ramirez providing two of the Prairie Fire shots and first-year Isabella Urrutia Flores taking the shot on goal.
  • Knox is 0-2-1 against the Pioneers since handing them a 2-0 defeat in 2021.

The Prairie Fire will get their opportunity to take down Lake Forest (6-2-2) — coming off a 6-0 victory over Ripon today — this Saturday, Oct. 5 at 3:30 p.m. at Mohr Field on the Foresters' campus. The game will be streamed live with stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox athletics.
