Lawrence Hands Knox Volleyball Three-Set Defeat

Maria Clara Jabor John led the Prairie Fire with six kills and a .385 attack percentage

APPLETON, Wis. — In each of the three sets at Lawrence University, the Knox volleyball team started strong but could not keep up with the Vikings as the hosts knocked off the Prairie Fire in straight sets, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18. Lawrence improved to 6-14 on the season and 1-1 in the Midwest Conference, while Knox (0-15, 0-2 MWC) was left still searching for its first victory of 2024.

First-year Maria Clara Jabor John helped the Prairie Fire match the Vikings at 10-10 in the first set with a pair of kills, but Lawrence then ripped off six straight points thanks to a trio of blocks. Knox could not string together back-to-back points for the rest of the set as the Vikings claimed the first set, 25-16.

The second set was even more promising at the outset with the Prairie Fire holding a 10-8 lead following a block by Jabor John and junior Carly Smith, the latter's second of the set. Even when Lawrence responded with four straight points, Knox knotted the score at 12 on a kill by senior Caroline Wolters. But the Fire could not regain the advantage, getting as close as one at 20-19 on another Jabor John kill, before the Vikings pulled away.

Just like the second set, Knox built up a 10-8 lead with a little help from consecutive solo blocks by Wolters followed by Smith. The two sides traded points to make it 11-9, only to have Lawrence put together an 8-0 run on the serving of Cora Linos. The Prairie Fire had one last gasp, closing the deficit to three at 17-14 with three straight points. The Vikings took control from there, closing out the sweep.

  • Jabor John led Knox with six kills and a .385 attack percentage.
  • Other Prairie Fire leaders: first-year Zoe Thunhurst with nine assists, Wolters and junior Sam Black with eight digs apiece, and Smith with three blocks.
  • Knox's losing streak is now at 20 matches dating back to last season.

The Prairie Fire, which have had one home match all season thus far, has one more on the road before starting a six-game home stand. Up next is a non-conference showdown with Blackburn College (1-16) in Carlinville, Illinois, on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. Live stats will be available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics.
