RIPON, Wisconsin - The Prairie Fire women's basketball team saw their season come to an end with an 84-70 loss to Ripon in the Midwest Conference Championship on Saturday. Knox finished the season at 19-8, their second highest win total in school history.
Midway through the first quarter, the teams were tied 11-11. After the Prairie Fire took a 14-13 advantage, the Red Hawks used a 12-4 run to finish out the first period with a 25-18 lead.
Ripon then outscored Knox 21-8 in the second quarter to take a strong 46-26 lead into halftime.
The Prairie Fire chipped away at the lead in the second half, outscoring the Red Hawks 23-19 in the third period and 21-19 in the final quarter. However, they could not make up the deficit and Ripon earned the conference title.
Bria Medina led Knox with 23 points. She added five rebounds and three assists. Nyah Daniels racked up 14 points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Sarina Dacio and Kylee Callahan tallied 11 points apiece. Callahan tacked on six rebounds. Saxon Alvarez hit a pair of three-pointers in two attempts.
"We fought wire-to-wire, despite numerous roadblocks," said head coach Seth McDowell. "We got pretty beat up on a few tough plays, but we showed resilience and were able to claw back into the game a bit in the second half. I am very proud of the team for putting every ounce of effort into this game. Our season ended today, but we certainly went out with grit."
The Prairie Fire conclude their season after posting the best two-year win total in school history, with a total of 41 wins. Several of the women's basketball players will certainly have strong cases for the upcoming announcement of the MWC All-Conference squad.
