Men's Basketball Falls to Monmouth on Last Second Shot

GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire men's basketball team dropped a nail-biter to Monmouth on Tuesday night, falling 65-64 on a last second shot.

Knox jumped out to a 13-4 lead early in the second half, but the Fighting Scots stormed back to tie the game 17-17. After some back and forth, Knox entered halftime with a 27-26 advantage.

Monmouth started the second half on a 16-10 run to take a five point lead, but the Prairie Fire scored five straight to tie the game 42-42. The teams exchanged leads for the remainder of the game with Knox taking a 64-62 lead with 6.0 seconds remaining. The Fighting Scots drew a foul on a shot to earn two free throws with 1.4 seconds left. Monmouth hit the first and the Prairie Fire took a timeout. The Fighting Scots missed the second free throw, but got a tip-in to take the lead as time expired.

Andrew Milot led Knox with 20 points and five assists. Sean Gallery and Russell Wright both earned double-doubles with Gallery scoring 15 and grabbing 11 rebounds and Wright tallying 10 points and pulling down 12 boards.

"That is a devastating way to lose a game," said head coach Ben Davis. "I thought we executed well on both the offensive and defensive end for most of the night. Our guys played really hard, which gave us a chance to win the game on a night that we didn't shoot well from outside and our opponent did."

The Prairie Fire will return to action on February 10 when they travel to Beloit for their final road game of the season.
