Maya McEwen is a graduating senior who played on the volleyball and softball teams. Maya is a Data Science major and was the Midwest Conference Representative for the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).
What is something that you have done in the last year that you are really proud of? Can you go into detail about the experience and why you are so passionate about it?
I am about to finish my Data Science Senior Project where I built a dashboard for Coach Gibbons to track progress of athletes and teams in the weight room. Using software called Power BI, I was able to look at progress and trends for each individual athlete and compile them into a report that is easily accessible. I am passionate about this project because it gave me the opportunity to give back to Coach Gibbons after all his years of supporting and pushing us athletes. Our hopes are for this project to continue to be used for years to come.
What do you love most about your sport?
The thing I love most about softball is the way it teaches you to accept failure. In softball if you are failing 70% of the time you are doing well, so being able to understand failure and developing the skills to translate that to other things in life has been very beneficial.

Why did you choose Knox?
I chose Knox because it gave me the opportunity to play both volleyball and softball and I made really good connections with the coaches during my recruiting process.

The thing I love most about Knox is the people it has brought me and the relationships I have been able to develop.
What do you like most about Galesburg/ the Galesburg Community?
The best thing about Galesburg is Orange Cup Java Station!
What advice would you give your younger self knowing where you are today?
Don't take everything so seriously, not everything is supposed to feel like a job and it's okay to have fun.
