DUBUQUE, Iowa — While the Knox College volleyball team suffered two losses to close out its weekend at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invite, the Prairie Fire showed some glimpses of what they are capable of against Lake Forest in the opening match of the day. Knox ultimately fell, 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 9-25, 18-25), to the Foresters before the host Warhawks handed the Fire a 3-0 defeat (7-25, 11-25, 9-25).
Although the Knox College volleyball team ended its mid-week matches at the Loras Triangular with two defeats, the Prairie Fire flashed moments of solid play against Carroll University in the opening match before falling to host Loras College in the nightcap. Knox (0-5) dropped the first match to the Pioneers, 3-0 (18-25, 21-25, 14-25), then suffered a 3-0 defeat (16-25, 14-25, 19-25) to the host school.
In the first match against Carroll, Knox put up a strong fight in the second set, staying within striking distance while hitting at a .263 clip. But struggles with consistency left the Prairie Fire with a .094 hitting percentage for the match, which allowed Carroll to pull away in the end.
Knox faced a tough challenge against the Duhawks in the evening but showed resilience, even when down two sets. The Prairie Fire pushed Loras in the final set but ultimately fell by six points as the match came to a close.
- Senior Caroline Wolters led the Knox attack in both matches, hitting .200 with nine kills in the opening clash before adding six more kills versus Loras.
- Justice Cardenas, a first-year, displayed some of her play-making ability with 10 assists and a kill against Carroll, then closing the night with six more helpers and a pair of service aces.
- Junior Sam Black anchored the defense to start the day with eight digs, and sophomore Mayra Diaz matched that total in the nightcap.
- Sophomore Lydia Karl and first-year Zoe Thunhurst demonstrated efficiency against Loras with the former collecting five kills in just 11 attempts (.364 attack percentage) while the latter put away both her attempts.
Knox will look to regroup as it prepares for its home opener match against Illinois Institute of Technology on Wednesday, Sept. 11. The game will begin at 6 p.m. in Memorial Gymnasium with a live stream on the official website of Knox College athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
