DAVENPORT, Iowa — For the second straight weekend, the Knox College men's and women's track teams traveled to St. Ambrose University to compete against various teams from the region, this time at the Bumble Rumble. Senior Anthony Vazquez provided the top finish of the day, finishing second in the men's triple jump.
While most of the entrants in the triple jump either faulted or put forth their best jump on their first try, Vazquez got stronger and stronger. After starting at 12.26 meters (40 feet 2.75 inches) on his first jump, he kept increasing his length until he leapt 12.88 meters (42 feet 3 inches) on his fifth of six attempts. Only St. Xavier's Ronnie Foster bested him on this day (13.70 meters, 44 feet, 11.25 inches), and Vazquez's distance moved him up from eighth to sixth on Knox's top-10 list.
Two other men finished in the top 10 of their respective events. Senior Jacob Anderson placed sixth in the long jump with a distance of 6.27 meters (20 feet, 6.75 inches), which made him the eighth longest leaper in Prairie Fire history. And in the 3000 meters, sophomore Evan McClusky crossed the tape in 10th place with a time of 9:41.72.
Junior Steve Dzolic improved his weight throw distance by more than a full meter from last week, sending it 13.97 meters (45 feet 10 inches), making him the seventh-longest thrower in Knox history.
For the women, while sophomore Stephanie Nelson finished 17th in the weight throw, she improved her distance from last week to 13.23 meters (43 feet, 5 inches), moving her up one place on Knox's top 10 list into second behind only Christina Davis's toss of 46 feet 7.25 inches back in 2010.
Another women's thrower, sophomore Kenzie Ketterl, managed to etch her name into the Prairie Fire top 10 in the shot put with a heave of 10.29 meters (33 feet 9 inches), good for 10th on that list.
Up next for the Prairie Fire is the Midwest Invitational hosted by Monmouth College on Friday, Jan. 24. The events will begin at 4 p.m.
