GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College athletics department today announced its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for events that occurred between Oct. 6-12, with the awards going to sophomore Zoe Thunhurst of the volleyball squad and senior Reese Miller of the football team.
Thunhurst, a native of Garland, Texas, was utilized like a Swiss Army knife for the Prairie Fire last week, performing the duties of a setter, outside hitter and defensive specialist at various times. First, she led Knox with 12 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double against Rockford University. Then on Saturday for Homecoming, Thunhurst posted career highs of 10 kills and five service aces, plus led the team with 21 digs for another double-double to help the Prairie Fire defeat Beloit in four sets, evening the team's Midwest Conference record at 1-1.
While Miller did not record the gaudiest stats, it was his steady play behind center that led Knox to a 20-17 homecoming triumph over Grinnell on Saturday. The product of Lowell High School in San Francisco, California, completed as many passes as any Prairie Fire quarterback in the last 30 games (10-for-18) for 122 yards, plus ran for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 20 carries. The most telling statistic, however, was nary a turnover that allowed Knox to possess the ball for more than 37 minutes.
The Knox Athletes of the Week will be announced every Tuesday afternoon throughout the athletic calendar.
