GALESBURG, Ill. — After falling behind two sets to none, the Knox College volleyball team mustered up the energy to take the third set before succumbing to visiting Ripon College on Saturday afternoon at Memorial Gymnasium, 25-18, 25-17, 17-25, 25-13. The Red Hawks improved to 8-15 on the season and 2-3 in the Midwest Conference while the Prairie Fire dropped to 3-22 overall and 1-3 in the league.
Most of the first set was a back-and-forth affair with four ties before Knox took a 14-13 lead on a kill by sophomore Maria Jabor Jahn. After Ripon reclaimed the lead, the Prairie Fire knotted it back up at 16 apiece, but a seven-point Red Hawk run secured the first set for the visitors.
Neither side led by more than a point until Ripon ripped off four straight points for a 10-7 advantage in the second set. Following a six-point Red Hawk run shortly thereafter, Knox could not get any closer than five points down as it fell behind by two sets.
The Prairie Fire came to life in the third set with a seven-point run which included three consecutive aces by sophomore Bri Holland. Although Ripon got within four at 21-17, Knox rattled off the next four points to take the set for its own.
That momentum did not carry over into the fourth set, however, with the Red Hawks jumping out to an early lead that ballooned to 20-7, dashing any Prairie Fire hopes of a big comeback.
- Junior Elle Haddon led the team in kills (8) for the sixth straight match, while Jabor Jahn added seven.
- Holland contributed a double-double off 11 assists and digs, not to mention four aces.
- Sophomore Zoe Thunburg led a trio of Prairie Fire players in double-digit digs with 13.
- Ripon avenged its four-set defeat in Galesburg last year with this victory.
Knox won't have to travel far following its eight-match home stand with a mid-week showdown with rival Monmouth College (7-12, 1-2 MWC) on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. The match will be streamed live with live stats available through the official website of Knox College Athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu, courtesy of Monmouth.
