Women Battle Lawrence to Scoreless Draw

The Prairie Fire gave third-place Lawrence all it could handle

GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College women's soccer team squared off against Lawrence University on Saturday morning at Jorge Prats Field and played the Vikings — who sit third in the Midwest Conference standings — toe-to-toe in what ended as the Prairie Fire's second straight scoreless draw. Sophomore goalkeeper Darby Wallig made six saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season for Knox (3-8-3, 0-4-2 MWC), while Lawrence saw its record go to 7-4-6 overall and 3-1-2 in the league.

The first half featured eight shots combined by the two teams, five by the Vikings and three by the Prairie Fire, but the only two shots on goal came off the feet of Lawrence players. The first shot Wallig had to stop was not quite seven minutes into the contest, while the other did not come until the final minute of the half.

Although the Vikings lived up to their name by attacking more in the second stanza, Knox had a response each time and kept them off the scoreboard.

The best scoring opportunity for the Prairie Fire came in the game's final minutes when first-year Grace Johansen received a pass just outside the top of the box and got tangled with a Lawrence defender before getting off her shot. The ball was put back in play to the left of the box where the ball was when the game was stopped, and senior Isabella Shubert sent a very high kick into the box, where first-year Aniela Rossi headed the ball toward the left corner of the goal. Viking keeper Ally Littau made a diving, one-handed save, which did give Knox a corner kick, but the threat ended there.

  • Lawrence had won the previous three meetings after the Prairie Fire had won seven straight against the Vikings.
  • This was Knox's second consecutive shutout of an opponent having played Ripon College to a scoreless tie on the road last Saturday with Bri Mahoney earning the shutout in goal for the Fire.

The Prairie Fire will have two more chances to break into the win column in conference play, but first they travel to Elmhurst University (9-4-2) for a mid-week, non-conference matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 22 at 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch a live stream and keep up with the stats through the official website of Knox College Athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu, courtesy of Elmhurst.
