GRINNELL, Iowa — The Midwest Conference office announced its Performers of the Week in women's basketball this afternoon with Knox College sophomore Nayeli Nidez Acuña earning the honor following her stellar performance in the Prairie Fire's 86-74 victory over Illinois College last Tuesday. This is the second time in her career she has earned this honor.
Nidez Acuña, a 5-10 forward from Tucson, Arizona, led Knox with a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 field goals and 8-of-9 free throws while also grabbing nine rebounds. Twelve of those points came in the decisive second quarter as she hit all four of her shots from the floor and at the line as the Prairie Fire outscored the Lady Blues in the period, 30-14.
For the season, Nidez Acuña ranks among the top four in the MWC in scoring (16.8 ppg, fourth), rebounding (8.2 rpg, third), field goal percentage (.476, fourth) and free throw percentage (.821, third). Her previous career high was 26 points set last January, also against Illinois College, after which she received her first career Performer of the Week honor.
Knox will be back on the court tomorrow evening (Dec. 2), when it hosts undefeated Lawrence University (5-0, 0-0 MWC) at Memorial Gymnasium in the Vikings' conference opener at 7:30 p.m. The game will be live streamed with stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics.
