CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — For the second straight week, Knox College junior Lance Miller earned the gold, this time in the 5000 meters on the first day of the Mustang Distance Carnival & Open hosted by Mount Mercy University. His time of 14:46.20 highlighted the Prairie Fire performances on this day, easily breaking the program record set 25 years ago by nearly 40 seconds.

Prior to this season, Miller had not run this distance on the track, but during the indoor season he set the school record in his very first race, then topped that by more than 17 seconds in his next outing. Now in his second 5000 meter outdoor race, he shattered the program record and beat his indoor time by over 20 seconds and ran the 38th fastest time this season among Division III runners.

Senior A.J. Vazquez finished eighth in the long jump with a distance of 6.25 meters (20 feet 6 inches), while several other Knox athletes set personal records, including a pair of men in the 5000 meters — first-year Misha Ratner (16:43.04) and junior Elliott Varnum (17:25.30).

Two others with PRs were senior Dylan Timmer and junior Austin Cernich in the men's javelin at 35.25 meters (115 feet 7.75 inches) and 32.66 meters (107 feet 1.75 inches), respectively. And first-year Darby Wallig also set a PR in the women's shot put, heaving the weight 9.00 meters (29 feet 6.25 inches).

The meet will continue tomorrow beginning at 10:30 a.m.
