Cornell College Completes Sweep of Knox

The Rams scored early and often to put the Prairie Fire in a hole

GALESBURG, Ill. — Cornell College scored early and often, building up an 8-0 lead through three innings, to finish off a series sweep of the Knox College Prairie Fire baseball team on Sunday afternoon at Ash Park, 10-4. The Rams (14-21, 6-11 Midwest Conference) began the series three games behind Knox (14-20, 6-11) but with the sweep, drew even in the league standings.

The game began in promising fashion as the first two Prairie Fire batters both singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. But Knox could not get the runner home from third and came away empty-handed. In the bottom half, Cornell got a pair of RBI singles for a 2-0 lead.

Again the Fire threatened in the second when senior Etienne Thomas laced a one-out double, but he again Knox was unable to push him across the plate. And again the Rams put more runs on the board in their half of the frame thanks in part to a pair of Prairie Fire errors as well as a two-run double off the bat of Sean Alvarez as the lead grew to five runs. Then three more Cornell runs in the third made it an 8-0 game.

Meanwhile, four Ram pitchers held Knox scoreless through seven innings on just three hits with the only one after the first two batters of the game being the double in the second. But after Cornell hustled its way to a ninth run, the Fire finally got a run on the board when Thomas's grounder to second was misplayed with two outs and the bases loaded.

The Rams pushed their total into double digits on an RBI single courtesy of Vince Zipperer. Although Knox rallied for three runs in the ninth as sophomore Tyler Kemp, and juniors Andrew Garrett and Thomas Wilmot each drove in a run, the rally was snuffed out with the bases loaded on a fly to right to end the game.

Cai Brevig (3-0) picked up the win in just his second start of the season, while sophomore Leo Dircks (1-4) suffered the loss.

Cornell's Kale Rose was the star of the game at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double, three runs and five RBIs, while Zipperer had three hits to lead the 14-hit Ram attack. Knox ended the game with nine hits, three from sophomore Aidan McMurtrie.

Knox next hosts Beloit College (22-13, 10-7 MWC) for the final game of their three-game series on Wednesday, April 30 at 1 p.m. The Buccaneers won the first two meetings this past Tuesday, 13-3 and 9-2. The game will be streamed live with live stats through the official website of Knox Athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
