Knox Cruises to a 4-0 Road Win

The Prairie Fire outshot host Eureka, 36-0, with 23 of the attempts on goal

EUREKA, Ill. — Sophomore Isabella Urrutia Flores scored one goal and set up another with a perfect pass to split the defense in leading the Knox College women's soccer team to a 4-0 road victory at Eureka on Wednesday afternoon. The Prairie Fire (3-2-1) outshot the host Red Devils (1-5), 36-0, with 23 of those attempts on goal sending Knox to its fourth straight shutout.

"Today we put together a fantastic team effort," Prairie Fire head coach Annie Gerdes stated after the match. "I am really proud of this team and their willingness to work for their teammates. It was simply a great win for our team."

Senior Isabella Shubert set up the game's first goal in the 14th minute, finding Knox first-year and leading scorer Eliana Juarez on the right wing. Juarez closed the gap into the box and fired past the keeper for the 1-0 lead. Little more than two minutes later, Urrutia Flores led Juarez perfectly into the box, and her shot slammed off the charging goalkeeper. But the ricochet went directly into the face of a Eureka teammate, sending the ball into the goal for an own goal to make it a 2-0 game.

The Prairie Fire added to their lead in the 29th minute as first-year Grace Johansen scored her first collegiate goal by firing a shot from 25 yards out above the box to the lower-left corner past a diving keeper.

Plenty of goals to go around!

After halftime, Knox continued to control the game and Urrutia Flores put the stamp on the victory with her first goal of the season with just under 20 minutes to play. Juarez once again was challenged by the keeper near the goal, and the ricochet off this shot went to Urrutia Flores, who put the ball away with her left foot past a helpless defender.

  • Thanks to a stifling defense, sophomore goalkeeper Darby Wallig extended her streak to four games and nearly 400 minutes without allowing a goal, and her four shutouts leads the Midwest Conference.
  • Juarez, a Galesburg native, has three of Knox's seven goals this season.
  • The Prairie Fire essentially matched its shot output from the 8-0 win over Eureka last year, which featured 35 shots and 24 on goal.
  • The last time Knox had more shots was in a 4-1 win over Illinois College that featured 42 of them on Oct. 5, 2019.

The Prairie Fire play on the road again this Saturday, Sept. 20, when they travel to Carthage College (3-4-1) for a match at 1 p.m. Live video and stats for the match will be available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics courtesy of Carthage.
