SUPERIOR, Wis. — The Knox College volleyball team was defeated in its final two matches at the Stinger Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Superior on Saturday, falling in a pair of 3-0 matches to Concordia Moorhead (25-15, 27-25, 25-10) and the College of St. Scholastica (25-16, 25-11, 25-12). The losses dropped the Prairie Fire to 0-16 on the season while Moorhead improved to 3-6 and the Saints moved to 7-4.
Knox won the first three points to start the day, only to have the Cobbers respond with the next eight points and keep the Prairie Fire at bay in the first set. In the second set, Knox fell behind by as many as five points at 13-8, then rallied to take a 18-16 lead thanks to five consecutive points. Moorhead was on the verge of taking the set at 24-21 when the Fire won four straight volleys for a 25-24 lead. But the Cobbers recovered an took the next three to take a 2-0 lead, and they jumped out to an 11-1 lead in the third then cruised to the three-set sweep.
St. Scholastica only trailed after one point any of the three sets, that being 1-0 to start the second set, as Knox had trouble getting any momentum going in the match. But the Prairie Fire showed life late in the first set, putting away four kills in a five-volley stretch before the Saints clinched the set on a kill of their own. After Knox took the first point in the second set, St. Scholastica won the next five. Then with the Prairie Fire trailing, 10-5, a nine-point run put the set out of reach, even with a four-point Knox spurt — including consecutive aces from senior Sam Black — facing set point. The Saints had a 10-point run in the third set to help them end the match with the sweep.
- Junior Elle Haddon and sophomore Zoe Thunhurst led Knox with six kills apiece against Concordia Moorhead.
- Jabor Jahn served up a career-high three aces against the Cobbers as well.
- Haddon had a team-best seven kills versus St. Scholastica as well, while Jabor Jahn added five.
- Thunhurst earned a spot on the all-tournament team as she amassed 11 kills, 32 assists and 32 digs over the Fire's four matches.
