GALESBURG, Ill. — The Knox College athletics department today announced its Male and Female Athletes of the Week for events that occurred between Sept. 15-21, with the honors going to a pair of sophomores in Chase Caldwell of the Prairie Fire football team and Isabella Urrutia Flores of the women's soccer squad.
A linebacker from Sarasota, Floria, Caldwell was the linchpin of a stout defensive performance at Beloit that carried Knox to a 16-14 victory over the Buccaneers. He recorded a team-high nine tackles, two going for a loss, including a huge sack in the fourth quarter that jarred the ball loose and into the hands of a teammate, preserving that two-point lead with 4:35 left in the game. Two of his other tackles stonewalled a ball carrier at the line of scrimmage, and he also had another that stopped Beloit a yard shy of the first-down marker, forcing a punt.Â
Urrutia Flores, a native of Distrito Central, Honduras, played a pivotal role in Knox's 4-0 road win at Eureka. The forward scored her first career goal in the victory, and passed the ball exceptionally well. One of her passes threaded through the defense to a teammate, whose shot ricocheted off the goalkeeper and an opponent's face before ending up in the net. While it counted as an own goal, Urrutia Flores' pass is what made the tally possible.
The Knox Athletes of the Week will be announced every Tuesday afternoon throughout the athletic calendar.
