GRINNELL, IOWA – The Knox College women were able to get back on the winning track, going on the road to top Grinnell 68-67 on Wednesday night.
The Prairie Fire (13-11, 11-4) remained in third place in the Midwest Conference. Knox closes the regular season at Lawrence on Saturday, then has a rematch with Lawrence in the first round of the conference tournament next Friday at Ripon.
Knox had to hold off a late Grinnell rally to score the win as the Pioneers tried to rally late.
The Prairie Fire battled early foul trouble but managed to lead 15-9 after a quarter. In the second, Grinnell outscored Knox 25-17 to take a 34-32 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, Knox built a big enough lead, thanks to a 23-14 advantage,
In the final period, Knox pushed the advantage to 10, 63-53, with 5:13 remaining. Grinnell came back, but could not catch Knox, as a buzzer-beating three by the Pioneers left them one point shy of catching the Prairie Fire.
Kylee Callahan had one of her biggest nights of the season, scoring a team-high 23 points. Callahan added seven boards and three steals. Also scoring 20 points was Bria Medina, who finished with 20 points, seven rebounds, and four steals. Nayeli Nidez Acuña scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds while Carly Smith scored eight and Izzy Robinson added seven.
