It was a busy weekend for the Knox College track and field team, with Prairie Fire student-athletes competing at two locations.
On Friday night, the evening belonged to Knox senior Lance Miller. Running the 5000 meters at the Wisconsin-Platteville Invitational, Miller set a new program record in the event, covering the track in 14 minutes, 38.47 seconds. Miller's time was nearly 8 seconds faster than the previous school record, which he also set last spring. Miller's run earned him 49th place overall in the event, which featured 343 of the best 5k runners in the Midwest.
On Saturday, the rest of the Prairie Fire traveled to Grinnell for the Dick Young Classic.
In the field, Elle Haddon started strong, winning the women's javelin with a best throw of 30.68 meters (100-08 feet), the eighth-best in program history.
The Knox women were not done putting up scoring efforts in the field. In the long jump, the Prairie Fire had a pair of placers. Altynai Ruslanova finished fifth with a best leap of 4.43 meters (14-06.5 feet) while Kayleigh Jones was seventh with a best effort of 4.23 meters (13-07 feet). Ruslanova and Jones were not done, though, as each scored points in the triple jump. Ruslanova was third with a best of 9.12 meters (29-11.25) and Jones fourth with an 8.81 meters (28-11). Also in the field, Stephanie Nelson had another highlight day. Nelson finished fifth in the hammer, with a best effort of 43.99 meters (144-04). Nelson also finished ninth in the shot with a best of 10.28 meters, which is also the eighth-best performance in program history.
For the men, Ryan Lautzenhiser had a big day, finishing fifth in the 200 in 23.19. Showing little impact from the night before, Miller also scored the Knox men's points, finishing second in the 1500 meters in 4:03.32.
In the men's 5000, Knox scored with three runners. Misha Ratner led with second in 16:40.32, followed by Elliott Varnum in 17:52.66. Maxwell Reid finished fifth at 18:36.29.
In the field, Stevan Dzolic placed seventh in the hammer with a 43.7-meter (143 feet, 4 inches) throw. Ethan Strutzel was sixth in the javelin at 40.01 meters (131-03).
The Prairie Fire are next at the Augustana Meet of Champions on April 17 and 18.
