Knox College is excited to introduce Dale Compton as its new Cross Country and Distance coach bringing a proven track record of athlete development and championship success to Galesburg. Compton previously served as an assistant cross country and track and field coach at the University of Puget Sound in Seattle, Washington.

"I'm excited to welcome Coach Compton to our staff," Director of Track and Field and Cross Country / Head Track and Field Coach Mark Nelson said. "He brings a fresh energy, a competitive mindset, and a genuine passion for developing athletes the right way. Our team is going to feel his impact immediately, and I can't wait to see what we will build together."

At Puget Sound, Compton mentored two cross-country national championship qualifiers and three all-region honorees, including the 2024 individual conference champion. He also helped develop one National Champion, three All-Americans, and 13 individual conference champions as a member of the track coaching staff. His runners broke 20 school records and ranked in the program's top 10 74 different times. He mentored two Northwest Conference Athletes of the Year and coached 22 All-Conference selections. 

"I am very excited for the opportunity to come to Knox as the Head Cross Country Coach," Coach Compton said. "Being originally from Minnesota and spending most of my life in the Midwest, taking this position at Knox feels like coming home. When I visited campus, what stood out to me immediately was the community. After spending time with Coach Nelson and meeting many others from the athletic department, I felt like a member of the team right away."

Before coaching at Puget Sound, Compton served as head coach at Loyola Catholic in Mankato, Minnesota, from 2000 to 2023. During that time, Compton led 15 teams and 125 individuals to the state championship meet. He coached eight individual state champions and 60 All-State performers. He also helped produce 94 Academic All-State performers. 

"The Division III philosophy is a perfect fit for me," Compton said. "I was a DIII student-athlete myself and have spent the past three years coaching at the DIII level, so having the opportunity to guide and mentor the dedicated student-athletes at Knox is right up my alley."
