A goal less than five minutes into the match was the first of two Westminster College would score in the first half en route to a 3-1 non-conference victory against Knox College Saturday at Jorge Prats Field.
The Blue Jays (2-2) scored first at the 5:08 mark when midfielder Courtney Luebbert put in a header, assisted by forward Jen Brotherton. Westminster added another score late in the 42nd minute when Megan Gunnels found the goal on a shot that took an unfortunate bounce for Knox first-year goal keeper Rachael Koene, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead.
Westminster went up 3-0 at 62:23 when Brotherton scored from straight on, assisted by Alex Johnson, to put the match out of reach.
The Prairie Fire (2-3) avoided being shut out when junior Claire Turner (Kildeer, Illinois) scored her first goal of the season at the 78:59 mark of the match to account for the final score.
Koene made eight saves in goal for Knox, which was outshot by Westminster 19-12.
The Prairie Fire will try to improve on a 1-3 record at home Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in a non-conference match against Lincoln Christian University.
