Grinnell College defeated the Prairie Fire 5-0 Sunday in the 2011 regular season finale in Grinnell, Iowa to earn a share of the Midwest Conference championship.
The Pioneers (10-5-2, 7-1-1 MWC) finished with the same league record as Carroll University and St. Norbert College in winning its first title since 2006. Lawrence University also qualified for the conference tournament, which will feature St. Norbert as the top seed.
Grinnell's Morgan Sullivan opened the scoring with a goal 14:41 into the match to give her team a 1-0 advantage. Cynthia Dominguez scored for the Pioneers less than five minutes later for a 2-0 lead.
Grinnell added three second half goals -- in the 68th, 74th, and 76th minutes -- while preventing Knox (3-13-1, 1-7-1 MWC) from getting anything going offensively.
The Prairie Fire managed only one shot against Grinnell, which had 29, including 14 on goal.
Sophomore Rachael Koene (Golden Valley, Minnesota) and senior Emily Turner (Kildeer, Illinois) combined for nine saves in goal for Knox.
The Prairie Fire finished 8th in the Midwest Conference, ahead of Illinois College (4-10-4, 0-6-3 MWC) and Beloit College (4-11-2, 0-7-2 MWC).
