Appleton, WI - The Prairie Fire snapped a five game losing streak with a second half rally that led to a 71-68 victory Tuesday night at Lawrence University.
Knox (1-5, 1-4 MWC) whittled away at a 36-23 lead by the Vikings (2-4, 1-2 MWC) with 4:24 to play in the first half by scoring eight unanswered points to cut the deficit to 36-31 at halftime.
Lawrence led by seven points on four occasions early in the second half, the last time at 45-38 with 16:31 left in the game.
Knox tied the contest at 46-46 on a jumper by senior Tanner Carlson (Annawan, IL, Annawan). The Fire completed a 12-1 run by taking the lead for good at 50-46 with 12:28 remaining.
Lawrence closed the gap to 50-49 at the 12:08 mark, but the Fire built the lead back to nine at 69-60 on a pair of free throws by Carlson.
The Vikings had a chance to tie the game on their final possession, but a 3-point shot attempt by Tyler Crisman was off the mark
The win by the Prairie Fire ended an 11 game skid against the Vikings.
Knox shot 48 percent in the second half and 42 percent overall while making 20-of-26 from the free throw line. After hitting 45 percent from the floor in the opening half, the Vikings fell to 35 percent shooting in the second half and 40 percent in the game. Lawrence made 5-of-19 shots from 3-point range over the final 20 minutes and finished 11-for-38.
The Prairie Fire outscored the Vikings 20-5 at the free throw line and held a 45-30 rebounding edge.
Carlson led all scorers with 21 points. Senior
Joe Kozak (Park Ridge, IL, Maine South) added 20 and
Lukas Shaw (Portland, OR, U.S. Grant) had 12.
Ryan DePouw was the leading scorer for Lawrence with 17 points off the bench.
Knox goes for its second straight win on Saturday afternoon at home against Milwaukee School of Engineering (4-5) at 4:00. The Raiders have already played two teams from the Midwest Conference -- St. Norbert College and Beloit College -- and lost both of those games.
