The season-opener for the Prairie Fire started with promise, but Franklin took control and scored a 5-1 win Friday in Franklin, Indiana.
Knox (0-1), playing its first game under new coach Melissa Joseph, jumped out to a 1-0 lead against the Grizzlies on an unassisted goal by junior Arielle Dorman (Bothell, Washington) 11:19 into the match. However, Franklin (1-0) responded with three straight goals (17:07, 18:33, 27:16) to grab a 3-1 lead at the intermission.
The hosts shut out the Fire offense in the second half while adding two more scores by Ali Norton -- the first at 52:46 and the second at 74:52 -- to claim the victory.
The Grizzlies outshot Knox (0-1) 34-4. Senior goal keeper Emily Turner (Kildeer, Illinois) had 15 saves for the Prairie Fire.
Knox resumes play September 5 at 1:00 p.m. at Jorge Prats Fiel against MacMurray College. The Prairie Fire beat the Highlanders 7-1 last season in Jacksonville, Illinois.
The non-conference match-up between Knox and MacMurray begins at 11:00 a.m.
