Jacksonville, IL – Two school records fell and the Prairie Fire finished first or second in seven events during the last meet of the regular season.
The Knox women placed fourth out of eight teams and the Knox men were fourth out of nine teams Friday night at the Illinois College Alumni Classic on Friday on the IC campus.
The men’s team set two new records, won two events, and placed second in three others. The women’s squad finished in the top two in a pair of events and established three new all-time top 10 marks.
Senior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, NY, Cleveland Hill) broke his own school record in the 60 meter dash with a new career-best time of 7.10 seconds. He finished second in the event at the meet, scoring eight points for the Prairie Fire. The previous record of 7.13 seconds in the 60 meters was set on February 2 at Grinnell College.
First-year sprinter Alan Lee (St. Louis, MO, St. Mary's) had a season-best time of 7.84 seconds in the 60 meter dash, which ranks #10 on the all-time performance list and #3 on the all-time individual list.
Puntoriero won the 200 meter dash in 22.65 seconds, which is the second-fastest time in school history. He set the record in the 200 with a time of 22.56 seconds two weeks ago at Grinnell College. Puntoriero also scored points for Knox with a sixth place finish in the long jump.
The other record-setting performance was by senior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy). Choate won the 3000 meter race in a time of 8:55.04, which broke the previous school record of 8:58.55 set in 2011 by Gabe Moreno.
The Knox men’s team also had second place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays.
Two field performers had career-best efforts at the meet.
Senior Dan Johnson (Chicago, IL, Luther South) had a weight throw distance of 47' 5 3/4" and senior Paul Lebryk (Glenview, IL, Glenbrook South) wasn't far behind with a throw of 44' 8 3/4". Johnson moved up to fourth on the all-time individual list with his throw and Lebryk is now sixth.
The women’s team won the 4x200 meter relay and senior Lizzy Warner (Champaign, IL, University Laboratory) placed second in the 800 meter run.
The Prairie Fire’s new all-time top 10 additions are first-year Mickella Duffy-Webb (Colorado Springs, CO, William J Palmer) and Lizzy Reyes (Oak Park, IL, Oak Park-River Forest), who placed seventh and eighth, respectively, in the mile at the meet.
Duffy-Webb finished the race in 5:55.74 for #5 on the all-time performance list and #3 on the all-time individual list. Reyes ran the mile in 5:57.31, the ninth-fastest time in school history and the #5 time on the individual list.
In addition, first-year runner Grace Neubauer (Inverness, IL, William Fremd) ran a season-best time in the mile – 5:59.29 – which ranks sixth on the all-time individual list.
Next up is the Midwest Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Monmouth College. The two-day event is February 22 and 23 and the meet will be streamed live online at http://client.stretchinternet.com/client/monmouth.portal#.
The streaming is scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. on February 22 and 11:30 a.m. on February 23.
