2014 ACM Volleyball Invitational Tournament hosted by Grinnell College September 13-14

UPDATE: The all-tournament team was released on Monday, September 15.  Prairie Fire junior Casey Stachelski and first-year Rose Griffin were named to the 12-player team.  Stachelski finished with 86 assists, 41 digs, and 13 kills in the four matches played.  Griffin tallied 48 kills, 46 digs, and 10 block assists.


Sunday, September 14

Knox was unable to pick up a second straight win in the tournament after dropping a 3-1 decision against Carleton in the first match of the day on Sunday.  Carleton won the first two sets, 25-9 and 25-13, to put the pressure on Knox.  The Prairie Fire (2-12) responded with a 25-23 win in the third set to cut the Knights' lead to 2-1.  Carleton (9-2) posted a 25-12 victory in the fourth set to take the match 3-1 and remain unbeaten at 3-0 against the field.  First-year Rose Griffin (Maryland Heights, MO, Rosati-Kain) had team-highs of 10 kills and 16 digs while fellow first-year hitter Kyleigh Guthals (Clovis, NM, Clovis) put down six kills and posted 10 digs for Knox.  Junior setter Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield Central) added 16 assists and nine digs.  The Prairie Fire meet Luther College in their fourth and final match of the tournament on Sunday afternoon.

Knox was unable to get over the hump against Luther in the final match of the tournament for both teams.  The Norse (7-5) won in straight sets 25-16, 25-18, 25-20 and finished with a 2-2 mark against the field while the Prairie Fire (2-13) went 1-3.  First-year Rose Griffin (Maryland Heights, MO, Rosati-Kain) tallied eight kills, nine digs, and two block assists to lead Knox.  First-year Kyleigh Guthals (Clovis, NM, Clovis) added five kills and junior Jamie Blue (Urbana, IL, University) had four, and sophomore Holly Bieber (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton College Prep) contributed eight digs and three service aces.  Junior Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield Central) paced the Prairie Fire with 19 assists.  Knox resumes play against Dominican University on Friday, September 19 in the two-day Illinois Wesleyan Tournament in Bloomington, Illinois.

The Prairie Fire gained the upper hand early with a 30-28 win in the first set.  Host Grinnell (3-7), however, responded with wins in the last three sets (25-14, 25-15, 25-17) to win the match featuring two Midwest Conference schools playing a non-conference contest in the ACM Tournament.  Knox (1-11) had two players reach double-figures in kill: first-years Rose Griffin (Maryland Heights, MO, Rosati-Kain) with 12 to lead all players and Kyleigh Guthals (Clovis, NM, Clovis) with 10.  Griffin also had 10 digs and a pair of block assists while Guthals recorded nine digs and two service aces.  Junior Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield Central) added 23 assists, 11 digs, and five kills, sophomore Holly Bieber (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton College Prep) contributed a match-high 16 digs, and junior Jamie Blue (Urbana, IL, University) chipped in with seven kills.  The Prairie Fire face Macalester College in the second and final match of the day on Friday.

The Prairie Fire got back in the win column in their final match of the day against Macalester.  Knox took the first set 25-18 before going up 2-0 in the match with a 25-15 victory in set two.  The Fighting Scots (6-6) stayed alive by winning the third set 25-21 before the Prairie Fire closed it out with a 25-23 triumph in the fourth set.  First-year Rose Griffin (Maryland Heights, MO, Rosati-Kain) had a match-high 18 kills along with five block assists and 11 digs.  First-year Kyleigh Guthals (Clovis, NM, Clovis) added nine kills and 24 digs, junior Casey Stachelski (Joliet, IL, Plainfield Central) led everyone with 28 assists to go with 18 digs, sophomore Holly Bieber (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton College Prep) contributed a team-high 31 digs, and sophomore Nicole Heckman (Chicago, IL, Chicago Latin) chipped in with three kills and six block assists.  Knox plays Carleton College (9:00 a.m.) and Luther College (1:00 p.m.) on the final day of the tournament on Sunday.
