Volleyball Drops a Pair to Start Season

The Knox volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on their opening day. Edgewood defeated the Prairie Fire 3-0 in the first match, while Knox faced #6 Washington University (St. Louis) in the nightcap.

Knox dropped the first set against Edgewood 25-19. After an early 3-1 lead, the Prairie Fire fell behind.  Once they went ahead 4-3, the Eagles carried a narrow lead for most of the set. The second set was a battle with both teams exchanging leads for much of the set, but Edgewood secured the final four points to take a 2-0 advantage into the final set. The third set was another back and forth affair with the Eagles securing three of the final four points after a 22-22 tie.

Rose Griffin (Maryland Heights, MO, Rosati-Kain) led the Prairie Fire with 9 kills in the match while first-year Emily Mosher (Glen Ellyn, IL, Glenbard West) chipped in 13 assists. Keiyah Triplett (Chicago, IL, Westinghouse) added nineteen digs for Knox.

The Prairie Fire hung with a challenging opponent in their second match of the day falling 19-25, 16-25, 20-25 to the Bears. Knox held an 11-8 advantage in the first set before WashU regrouped to score seven straight points after taking a timeout. The Prairie Fire would not make a run of their own. Knox could not get anything going in the second set, falling quickly behind 13-3. The Prairie Fire led for most of the third set until the Bears knotted it up at 16-16. Knox fought hard, but WashU was able to make a final push to take the set and the match.

Kyleigh Guthals (Clovis, NM, Clovis) paced the Prairie Fire with six kills, while first-year Maddie Byrne (Houston, TX, Clear Springs) added five. Rachael Powell (Indianapolis, IN, Lawrence Central) picked up nine assists and Triplett had thirteen digs.

Knox will face off against Webster and Adrian on September 3 to conclude their trip to St. Louis.
