Box Score LAKE FOREST, Illinois—The Prairie Fire football team suffered a heartbreaking loss at Lake Forest after leading 21-14 heading in the 4th quarter. Knox (3-2, 0-1 MWC) gave the undefeated Foresters a run for their money and almost came out with a win.

Knox and Lake Forest battled back and forth throughout the entire first half. The Fire did the honors of opening up the scoring when Matt McCaffrey took the ball himself 58 yards downfield for a rushing touchdown just seven plays into the game. Lake Forest quickly answered to make it 7-7. Just a few drives later, McCaffrey connected with Brendan Powers for a 23-yard touchdown to make the score 14-7 Prairie Fire. Lake Forest was able to tie the game up just under 30 seconds before halftime to make it 14-all.

After a three and out on the their first drive of the second half, Knox put together a seven-play, 72-yard drive which was capped by McCaffrey connecting with Malik Hamilton for a 32-yard touchdown to put the Fire up 21-14. Lake Forest scored early in the fourth quarter to tie the game up and a three and out by the Fire on the ensuing drive gave the Foresters the momentum to close the game out with a touchdown. Knox was unable to get anything going the rest of the 4th quarter and dropped the contest 28-21.

McCaffrey was 12-for-22 for 135 yards and two touchdowns on the day. His favorite target was Malik Hamilton who had three receptions for 45 yards. Grant Graham and Brendan Powers each had a reception for 35 and 23 yards, respectively. On the ground, McCaffrey led the way with 121 yards rushing and Braeden Westfall added 56. On the defensive end, Donnye Sommerville had 12 tackles on the day, Quinn Sharp added 10 tackles and a sack and Jordan Anderson tallied seven tackles and two sacks.

The Fire will look to get back to winning when they come back home to face Grinnell College on October 14.
