GENEVA, Ohio - Derrick Jackson and Tyrell Pierce competed in the 100m and 400m prelims, respectively, at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday afternoon.
Jackson finished second in his heat and sixth overall with a :10.58 to qualify for the finals on Saturday. He came into the event ranked 2nd in the nation with a qualifying time of 10.17. Jackson broke the Division III record earlier this year with his 10.17 dash at Culver-Stockton. He went on to pick up a pair conference championships in the 100m (10.63) and 200m (22.00) in the Midwest Conference (MWC) Outdoor Track and Field Championships on May 14.
Pierce finished fourth in his 400m heat and 10th overall while running a 47.68, missing the finals by one spot. The last qualifier was 47.66.
"Derrick and Tyrell both ran well today," said head coach Evander Wells. "That was the second fastest 400m that Tyrell has ever run and he just barely missed the cut for tomorrow. To finish top-10 in the country is an amazing feat and great way to finish the year. Derrick is on to the finals which was the goal all along, make the final and really hit it tomorrow. It has been a great weekend and we hope to cap it off tomorrow with a great performance in the final."
The finals for the 100m will be May 28 at 12:40 p.m. ET.
