GRINNELL, Iowa — The Midwest Conference announced its weekly women's soccer award winners this afternoon, and Knox College goalkeeper Darby Wallig was named the Defensive Performer of the Week. She is the first Prairie Fire player to earn this honor since Kathryn Coseglia on Oct. 14, 2019.
Wallig, a first year from Wendell, North Carolina, was stellar in goal last Tuesday against Midwest Conference rival Illinois College, which entered the game with a record of 8--2-2 on the season. She faced eight shots from the Lady Blues and turned away each one, recording her first career shutout. It also ended Knox's seven-game skid in league play as the game ended in a draw.
For the season, Wallig has an .837 save percentage and a 2.26 goals against average. Those numbers are even better against the Midwest Conference with an .846 save percentage and 1.33 GAA.
Knox (1-9-2, 0-2-1 MWC) hits the road for its next game, playing at Beloit (3-8-3, 2-1-1 MWC). The Prairie Fire would like nothing more than spoil the Buccaneers' Senior Day, which kicks off on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 3:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live with stats available through the official website of Knox athletics, PrairieFire.Knox.edu.
