GALESBURG, Ill. — While junior Elle Haddon posted a season-high attack percentage of .318 with nine kills and just two errors, the Knox College volleyball team was unable to keep up with visiting Lawrence University on Senior Night at Memorial Gymnasium as the Vikings (17-10, 2-2 Midwest Conference) defeated the Prairie Fire (3-21, 1-2 MWC) in straight sets, 14-25, 20-25, 17-25 on Friday evening.
Knox held an 8-7 lead in the opening set on the strength of some service misfires by Lawrence along with two Haddon kills and another by senior Amelia Gamez. But the Vikings rattled off seven straight points to take control and gradually continued to extend their lead until taking the set, 25-14.
In the second stanza, it was the Prairie Fire trailing by an 8-7 count when once again, Lawrence asserted itself, taking five of the next six points. The two teams essentially traded points from that point on with neither side winning more than back-to-back serves as the Vikings took a 2-0 lead on the five-point set victory.
For a third consecutive set, the score reached 8-7 with Lawrence holding the slim lead again. This time, Knox clawed back and took a 13-12 advantage thanks in large part to three Haddon kills. But a four-point Viking run put them back on top and they would not look back as they completed the sweep.
- Lawrence has won the last three meetings since Knox won three in a row.
- A trio of Prairie Fire players were busy on the back line trying to hold the Vikings at bay with sophomores Zoe Thunhurst and Bri Holland providing 13 digs and senior Sam Black a dozen more.
- Lawrence hit at a .274 clip while Knox was held to an .043 attack percentage.
- First-year Cilia Conley was a force up front for the Fire with a season-high four blocks.
Knox will close out an eight-match home stand — which comprises its entire home schedule this fall — with Ripon College (7-15, 1-3 MWC) invading Memorial Gymnasium tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.. The match will be streamed live with live stats available through PrairieFire.Knox.edu, the official website of Knox College Athletics.
