The Prairie Fire wasted little time scoring while the defense smothered visiting MacMurray College in a 5-0 non-conference victory Monday at Jorge Prats Field.
The win was the first of the season for Knox (1-1) and new head coach Melissa Joseph. The Prairie Fire scored all five goals in the first half as junior Arielle Dorman (Bothell, Washington) led the way with two.
Sophomore Rachael Koene (Golden Valley, Minnesota) found the back of the net, assisted by first-year forward Ella Peterson (Wilmette, Illinois), at the 1:11 mark of the match for a quick 1-0 Prairie Fire lead.
Dorman scored 5:01 into the match -- assisted by junior Sam Thomas (Algonquin, Illinois) -- and senior Alex Rauland (Frankfurt, Germany) followed with her first goal of the season at 20:01, assisted by Dorman, for a 3-0 Knox advantage. Dorman's second goal, her third of the season, came less than 90 seconds later. Peterson wrapped up the scoring for the Prairie Fire when she found the back of the net at the 25:43 mark for a 5-0 lead at the intermission.
The defense was solid, not allowing MacMurray (0-2) to get off a shot. The Prairie Fire, meanwhile, fired 30 shots overall and 16 on goal. Highlander goalie Alicia Mayfield had 10 saves. Senior Emily Turner (Kildeer, Illinois) pitched a shutout in goal for Knox.
The Prairie Fire goes for a second straight win Wednesday afternoon (3:00 p.m.) at Eureka College.
