2012 Prairie Fire Classic

Round 2/Final Results: March 31, 2012

Peoria, IL - Thirteen teams took part in the two-round Prairie Fire Classic, which saw the team and individual titles decided by just one stroke, on Friday and Saturday at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria, IL.

The University of Dubuque won the team championship with a second round low score of 312 and a total of 628.  Monmouth College finished one stroke back in second place with a 629.  Rounding out the top five were St. Norbert College (637), Monmouth College B (647) and North Central College (655).

Augustana College (331-326-657) improved by five strokes in round two to place sixth.  Benedictine University of Springfield (322-342-664) had a tough day on Saturday, dropping 20 strokes from their first round score to place seventh overall.  Grinnell College (331-339-670) was eighth, Iowa Wesleyan (348-327-675) shaved 21 strokes off its first round score to move up to ninth place.  Knox College (342-346) fell from ninth place in the first round to finish 10th with a team score of 688.

Illinois College (359-349-708), Cornell College (359-364-723), and the Grinnell College B team (361-365-726) finished 11th through 13, respectively.

Blake Mitchell of Iowa Wesleyan College was the individual champion.  He followed his first round 83 with the low score of the second round of two-under 70 for a 153.  Mitchell finished one stroke ahead of both Joe Martin of St. Norbert College and Eric Wolfe of the University of Dubuque, both of whom earned second place honors.

Grinnell College's Peter Marsho fired a 155 for fourth place. 
Knox College senior Bobby Stuebi (Western Springs, IL, Lyons Township), Monmouth College's Ben Olson, Mike Olszewski of Monmouth College B, and Benedictine's Koester each tied for fifth place.  The four carded scores of 156 in the tournament.

Also finishing in the top 10 on the individual leaderboard was Jacob Hebbard of St. Norbert College, Kirk Kepley, and Martin Odegard -- both of the University of Dubuque -- after each shot a 157 and tied for ninth place.

Sophomore James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) finished in the top 20 for the Prairie Fire.  He followed his first round score of 77 with an 85 on the second day of the tourney for a 165 and 19th place.

The Knox men’s golf team is back in action on Monday and Tuesday at the Beu Mussatto Invitational at Western Illinois University.

Round 1 Results: March 30, 2012

Peoria, IL - The Prairie Fire had two players shoot in the 70s on Friday in the opening round of the tournament, played at Weaver Ridge Golf Course in Peoria.

Sophomore James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) led Knox with a first round low score of 77, which places him in a tie for fourth place on the individual leaderboard.  Senior Bobby Stuebi (Western Springs, IL, Lyons Township) carded a 78 and is tied for seventh.

The Prairie Fire’s score of 342 ranks ninth among the 13 teams in the field and is 11 strokes behind Grinnell College and Augustana College.  Those two schools are tied for seventh place at 331.

First round leader St. Norbert College shot a 313, three strokes ahead of the University of Dubuque.  Monmouth College (321) finished the round in third place while North Central College and Benedictine University – Springfield both turned in scores of 322 to tie them for fourth place.

The Individual leader is Joe Martin of St. Norbert College, who shot an even par 72.  Andy Koester of Benedictine University-Springfield is two strokes back after firing a 74 (+2).

The second and final round of the tournament resumes Sunday morning at 9:00.
