Macomb, IL – The Prairie Fire went up against tough competition in a field loaded with several NCAA Division I schools on Friday and Saturday at the Lee Calhoun Invitational.
The meet, hosted by Western Illinois University, featured the likes of Marquette, Northern Illinois, and Bradley – among others.
The Knox men’s team had two top three performances and made some changes to the all-time performance and individual lists.
Senior Kevin Box (Naperville, IL, Naperville North) placed second in the 3000 meter steeplechase in 9:46.42. His time ranks fourth all-time in the event at Knox. Box also owns the third-fastest steeplechase time.
Sophomore Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) had a strong day throwing the javelin. He finished third in the meet with a distance of 154’ 1.” Chenoweth’s effort ranks ninth on the all-time individual list at Knox and is tied for the third longest throw to date in the Midwest Conference.
Junior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) also had a standout performance in the 10K for the Prairie Fire. Choate’s time of 32:50.36, the fastest in the Midwest Conference this season, earned him a sixth place finish in the race and topped his previous best of 33:54.44 last season. He now ranks fourth on the all-time performance and third on the all-time individual lists in the 10K at Knox.
Also scoring points for the Prairie Fire men’s team was junior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, New York, Cleveland Hill) in the 400 meters, sophomore Gabe Moreno (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg ) in the 10K, and junior Jacob Buddell (Lake Bluff, IL, Lake Forest ) in the 10K.
Knox was 11th in the team standings. Marquette won the meet with 202 points. Western Illinois was second and Northern Illinois finished third.
Senior Emma Swanson (West Des Moines, IA, Valley) scored for the Knox women’s team with her seventh place in the 400 meter hurdles.
The Fire placed 13th in the women’s team standings. Marquette was first with 160 points, followed by WIU and NIU.
The Prairie Fie teams next take part in the Beloit Invite on April 21.
