Beloit, WI – The Prairie Fire men and women’s squads combined for 21 top three placements on Saturday at the Beloit Invitational.
Beloit hosted an outdoor meet for the first time since 1997. The Knox men had three event winners, six runner-up finishes, and four third place performances among those that scored. The Prairie Fire women won one event, finished second in three, and placed third four times.
Junior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) placed first in two events: the 1500 meter run and the 5K run. Sophomore Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) had the top distance in the shot put. Senior Emma Swanson (West Des Moines, IA, Valley) finished first in the 400 meter hurdles.
Earning second place finishes for the Knox women’s team were the 4x100 meter relay, senior Kristi Weller (Cullom, IL, Tri-Point) in the 100 meter dash, and sophomore Catie McLaughlin (Roscoe, IL, Hononegah) in the javelin throw. Placing second for the Knox men’s team were junior Jacob Buddell (Lake Bluff, IL, Lake Forest ) in both the 1500 and 5000 meters, junior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, New York, Cleveland Hill) in the 400 meter dash, the 4x400 meter relay, Chenoweth in the javelin, and sophomore Devin Compton (Aurora, IL, West Aurora) in the shot put.
Scoring third place points for the women were sophomore Yael Cody (Highland Park, IL, Highland Park) in the 1500 meters, Swanson in the 100 meter hurdles, senior Rayann Parkinson (Aledo, IL, Aledo) in the 400 meter dash, and McLaughlin in the hammer throw. The men’s team received third place performances from sophomore Matt Brongo (Eureka, IL, Eureka) in the 400 meter dash, Puntoriero in the 200 meter dash, junior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove) in the long jump, and junior Dan Johnson (Chicago, IL, Loyola) in the hammer throw.
The Fire men’s team tallied 151 points for second place in the standings behind the 210 scored by the host Buccaneers. Carroll University (122) was third and Rockford College (45) fourth.
The Knox women scored 83 points for third place, ahead of Rockford College (80). Beloit placed first with 209 points followed by Carroll University with 163.
The Prairie Fire teams travel to Illinois College on Saturday.
