Choate Wins 5K in Final Outdoor Track and Field Meet of 2012

Prairie Fire individuals combine for four top 10 performances

Rock Island – A member of the men’s outdoor track and field team placed first in a long-distance event at the Augustana College Twilight Meet on Friday.

The meet was the last of the season for the Prairie Fire, which also had a top five and two top 10 performances. 

Individuals representing host Augustana, Monmouth College, North Central College, Wartburg College, Nebraska Wesleyan, UW-River Falls, Cornell College, Olivet Nazarene University and several other schools.

Junior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) won the 5000 meter run with his time of 15:48.05, more than 9.5 seconds ahead of the second place runner from Augustana College.  Choate topped his previous career-best time of 15:53.90 that he set in the 2011 Midwest Conference Championships at Monmouth College.

Choate moved up to eighth on the all-time individual list in the event by a Knox runner and seventh on the all-time individual list.

Junior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, New York, Cleveland Hill) placed fifth in the long jump with a distance of 21’ 11 ½”.  He's now fourth on the all-time individual list after improving his previous jump of 21’ 7 ¼” last season.

Junior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove), who recently medaled with a second place finish at the Midwest Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships at St. Norbert College, placed in the top 10 at Augustana.  He unleashed a throw of 151’ 8” for a seventh place finish.

A member of the women’s team also had a top 10 finish at the meet.  Sophomore Catie McLaughlin (Roscoe, IL, Hononegah) finished eighth in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 105’ 2” which is fifth on the all-time performance list and ranks third on the all-time individual list in the event at Knox.

Senior Tony Sickley (LaSalle, IL, LaSalle-Peru) also participated in the meet, his last for the Prairie Fire men’s team, in the shot put and the hammer throw.
