Lee Calhoun Invitational results
Macomb, IL – A runner for the Prairie Fire topped all competitors in a long distance race at the Lee Calhoun Invitational on Friday.
Senior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) finished first in the 10,000 meter run in a time of 32:16.19 to score 10 of the Knox men’s team’s 12 points at the meet hosted by Western Illinois University.
Choate blew away his previous personal best time of 32:50.36 in the 10K, which he set a year ago at the same meet and ranks #5 on the all-time top 10 performance list and #4 on the all-time individual list. His new career-best effort is the second-fastest time in the event in Knox outdoor track history.
Choate crossed the finish line nearly two seconds ahead of the second place runner from Adams State and was only 3.59 seconds shy of the school record time (32:12.60) in the outdoor 10,000 meter run held by Paul Grinis since 2000.
In addition to owning the #2 all-time fastest performance in the 10K in school history, Choate’s time also ranks as the third-best by a Midwest Conference runner to date.
Another distance runner, first-year Victor Schultz (Staunton, VA, Robert E Lee), scored with an eighth place finish in the 5000 meter run. Schultz ran the race in 16:31.80.
The Prairie Fire also added a point in the javelin. Junior Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) had a top throw of 149’ 9”.
Knox tallied 12 points to tie for 14th place with Bradley University, one of 12 NCAA Division I schools that competed in the men’s meet.
The University of Illinois finished first in the men’s team standings with 178 points followed by the University of Iowa with 170.50. Host Western Illinois was third while Augustana College and Marquette University tied for fourth place.
Besides Choate, junior Tim Worrell (Wataga, IL, ROWVA) recorded a hammer throw distance that placed him on the all-time individual list. Worrell’s throw of 122’ 4” is seventh on the list and surpasses his previous personal best of 120’ 10”.
The Prairie Fire women’s squad was part of a field of 15 teams, and 10 compete at the NCAA Division I level.
Knox scored in the 4x400 meter relay. Seniors Lizzy Warner (Champaign, IL, University Laboratory) and Jenny Linder (Owasso, OK, Owasso School of Science and Math), junior Carli Bogolub (Downers Grove, IL, Highland Park), and first-year Carolina Goncalves (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton Prep) finished in a time of 4:40.74.
The University of Iowa finished first in the women’s team standings with 212 points. Marquette University was a distant second with 113. Host WIU placed fifth.
