Dubuque, IA – The Prairie Fire track and field teams combined for 13 top five performances at the University of Dubuque Open on Saturday.
Knox had two event winners in senior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) and junior Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton). Choate finished first in the 5000 meter run and Chenoweth had the top discus throw of 139’ 9” which is the best in the Midwest Conference to date.
Chenoweth was also one of three members of the Prairie Fire squads to place second in an event. He was the runner-up in the shot put, senior Dan Johnson (Chicago, IL, Luther South) placed second in the hammer throw, and senior Lizzy Warner (Champaign, IL, University Laboratory) was second in the 400 meter dash.
The others to place in the top five were first-year Carolina Goncalves (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton Prep) in the 400 meter dash (3rd), first-year Victor Schultz (Staunton, VA, Robert E Lee) in the 5000 meter run (4th), first-year Lizzy Reyes (Oak Park, IL, Oak Park-River Forest) in the 5000 meter run (4th), sophomore ShirJia Bielefeld (Weston, WI, DC Everest) in the pole vault (4th), first-year Brennan McGlauchlen (Inver Grove Heights, MN, Simley) in the shot put (5th), first-year Derinn Wallace (Springfield, IL, Glenwood) in the discus (5th), junior Sophia Mwaura (Santa Fe, NM, Santa Fe Prep) in the javelin (5th), and the women’s 4x100 meter relay team (5th – Warner, Goncalves, junior Yetunde Durotoye (Lagos, Nigeria, Loyola Jesuit College), and sophomore Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg)).
In addition, five Knox track and field athletes established new all-time top ten entries.
Johnson’s hammer throw of 146’ 8” ranks third on the all-time performance list and #2 on the all-time individual list. Senior Paul Lebryk (Glenview, IL, Glenbrook South) also moved up the all-time individual list to #4 in the hammer with a throw of 131’ 11”. Chenoweth’s first place discus throw is sixth on the all-time individual list. Bielefeldt is fourth on the all-time individual list with a pole vault height of 8’ 6 ¼” and Mwaura is 10th on the all-time performance list with her hammer throw of 118’ 5”.
The men’s team, which placed sixth of eight teams with 51 points, also received scoring contributions from junior Devin Compton (Aurora, IL, West Aurora) and senior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove). Compton placed seventh in the discus and Mack was ninth in the long jump.
The women’s team finished seventh out of seven teams with 46 points. The other scorers were junior Danielle Erikson (Mokena, IL, Lincoln-Way East), Shelly, and the 4x400 meter relay team. Erikson was seventh in the javelin, Shelly finished eighth in the 400 meter intermediate hurdles, and the 4x400 relay team placed sixth. Running in the relay were Goncalves, Warner, Shelly, and Durotoye.
The University of Dubuque swept the team standings by winning both the women’s and men’s meets. Cornell College placed second behind Dubuque.
The Knox track and field teams participate next in the Beloit Relays, hosted by Beloit College on April 26 and 27.
