Round one results
Normal, IL – The Prairie Fire got off to a slow start in the opening round of the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational on Friday at Ironwood Golf Course.
Knox, playing its first tournament of the spring season, begins the second round in 25th place after shooting a first round 370. Junior James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) leads the Prairie Fire with an 83 followed by sophomore Ben Schlotter (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian) with an 84.
Fenner shot a 44 on the front nine followed by a 39 on the back nine holes. Schlotter carded scores of 45 and 39 on the day.
Wittenberg University fired a 293 in the first round. The Illinois Wesleyan JV team and Wheaton College are tied for second place four shots behind Wittenberg. Illinois Wesleyan is fourth at 298 and Millikin University rounds out the top five teams with a 299.
Ben Hogenkamp of Wittenberg and Jonny Tink of Wheaton are the co-leaders after both shot 71s on Friday.
Sophomore Matt Gordon (Elk Gove Village, IL, Elk Grove) shot 101 (49-52) and junior Mackinzie Champman (Sheffield, IL, Annawan) followed with a 102 (46-56) for Knox.
The second and final round of the tournament begins at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.
