2013 Midwest Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships May 10-11 at Beloit College

Beloit, WI – The Prairie Fire had two first place medalists at the Midwest Conference meet hosted by Beloit College.
Senior Jonas Mack (Algonquin, IL, Cary-Grove) won the conference championship in the javelin and senior Joe Puntoriero (Cheektowaga, New York, Cleveland Hill) won the conference championship in the 200 meter dash. Puntoriero also placed second in the 100 meter dash and was named a Midwest Conference Outstanding Men’s Track Performer.
This is the first year Knox has had more than one conference champion since 1995.
Mack’s javelin throw of 168’ ranks third on the Knox all-time top ten performance list. Puntoriero’s time of 22.02 seconds in the 200 meters is the fourth-fastest of all-time in the event. He’s also ranked fourth all-time after crossing the finish line in 10.95 seconds in the 100 meter dash.
Puntoriero established the fifth fastest-times in the 100 and 200 meters in the preliminaries as well.
Junior Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) placed sixth at the meet in the javelin (155’ 4”) and the shot put (44’ 2 1/2”). His javelin throw ranks ninth on the all-time top ten individual list.
Senior Dan Johnson (Chicago, IL, Luther South) owns the second-longest hammer throw in Knox outdoor track and field history. He recorded a distance of 149’ for a seventh place finish.
The Prairie Fire men’s team also scored in the 10,000 meter run and the 4x100 meter relay.
Senior Sean Choate (Chicago, IL, Chicago Academy) finished eighth in the 10K. The 4x100 relay team also placed eighth with Puntoriero, Mack, first-year Sam Reading (Tennessee, IL, West Prairie), and first-year Ian Horne (Albuquerque, NM, La Cueva) each running a leg in the race.
The men’s team finished ahead of Beloit College and was just nine points behind eighth place Cornell College (47). Monmouth College (201), St. Norbert College (132), Grinnell College (80), Carroll University (76), and Ripon College (72) were the top five teams.
First-year Carolina Goncalves (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton Prep) finished eighth in the 400 meter dash and senior Lizzy Warner (Champaign, IL, University Laboratory) placed eighth in the 800 meter run for the Prairie Fire women’s team. Warner finished the 800 meters in 2:27.09, which ranks #10 on the Knox all-time top ten individual list.
The women’s squad placed seventh in the 4x400 meter relay and 10th overall in the meet. The relay runners were Warner, Goncalves, sophomore Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg), and first-year Shelby Holdener (Murray, UT, Alta).
Monmouth swept the team standings. The Fighting Scots women’s team scored 244.5 points followed by Illinois College with 112. Rounding out the top five were St. Norbert (99.5), Carroll (87), and Ripon (60).
