Illinois College (853), Knox, and Ripon College (931) rounded out the field.

St. Norbert’s Nick Vrubley was the individual conference champion.  Vrubley is the first SNC golfer to win the league’s individual title. He fired a 75 in the third round and concluded play with a 188, three strokes ahead of runner-up Blaine Lynch of Carroll.

Prairie Fire junior James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) shot an 80 on Saturday to finish in a three-way tie for eighth place with a score of 198.  Fenner earned his second medal after tying for sixth place in last year’s MWC Championship.

Round 2:

Results

The weather continues to create challenges for the golfers from the eight schools competing in the Midwest Conference Championship at Aldeen Golf Club.

The three schools that were unable to play all 18 holes of golf finished the first round Friday morning.  However, wet conditions limited the second round to just nine holes.

Through it all, first round leader St. Norbert College remains on top by three strokes over Monmouth College.  The Green Knights and the Fighting Scots both shot 159 on the front nine holes, tying for the low team scores of the day.

No other team is within 10 strokes of St. Norbert (470) and Monmouth (473).  Carroll University, the winner of the last two conference championships, had a nine hole score of 163 and finished the day at 485, three strokes ahead of Grinnell College (166 – 488).

Lawrence University (164 – 497) is in fifth place followed by Illinois College (168 – 511), Knox (196 – 561), and eighth place Ripon College (192 – 580).

Junior James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) is still in line for a medal after firing a 40 in the abbreviated second round and will begin round three with a 118.  He’s tied for sixth place, five strokes behind leader Nic Vrubley of St. Norbert (113).  Vrubley shot an even par 36 in the second round.

Jon Cohen of Carroll is in second place with a 115.  Monmouth teammates David Blake and Cory Fell are one stroke apart.   Blake is alone in third place at 116 while Fell is tied for fourth with Ian Luby of Grinnell after both concluded 27 holes with identical scores of 117.  Fenner is in a three-way tie for sixth place with Blaine Lynch of Carroll, who shared the lead with Fell after the first round, and Nick Roelse of St. Norbert.

Sophomores Ben Schlotter (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian) and Mackinzie Chapman (Sheffield, IL, Annawan) both shot 50s on Friday while fellow sophomore Matt Gordon (Elk Gove Village, IL, Elk Grove) carded a 56.

The conference expects the teams to get in 18 holes on Saturday.  The weather forecast for Rockford is calling for a 30% chance of rain mainly before 1:00 p.m., cloudy, and a high around 67 degrees.

Round 1:

Results

The weather was perhaps more of a challenge to the golfers than the course on Thursday at Aldeen Golf Club.

Lightning strikes caused delays, and the day ended with three teams – Grinnell College, Ripon College, and Lawrence University -- unable to finish the first round.  They’ll wrap up the remaining 18 holes from the opening round on Friday morning.

All of the other teams played a complete first round.  Knox goes into the second day in fifth place with a team score of 365.  St. Norbert College shot 311 and owns a three stroke lead over second place Monmouth College.  Defending champion Carroll University is in third place with a 322 and Illinois College is fourth with a 343.

Prairie Fire junior James Fenner (East Peoria, IL, Metamora) fired a 78 and is tied for fifth place with three other golfers, two strokes behind co-leaders Cory Fell of Monmouth and Blaine Lynch of Carroll.

Knox sophomore Ben Schlotter (Chambersburg, PA, Cumberland Valley Christian) carded a 91 followed by sophomores Mackinzie Chapman (Sheffield, IL, Annawan) with a 96 and Matt Gordon (Elk Gove Village, IL, Elk Grove) with a 100.
