ResultsDubuque, IA – Three runners for the Prairie Fire crossed the finish line first at the University of Dubuque Open on Friday.
The Knox men's team scored 90 points to place fourth and he women's squad had 38 points and finished sixth.
The Prairie Fire won both the women's and men's 5000 meter races. Sophomore
Elizabeth Reyes (Oak Park, IL, Oak Park-River Forest) broke the tape for Knox in 19:52.27. First-year
Josh Tvrdy (Tucson, AZ, Pusch Ridge Christian Academy) placed first in the men's race in 16:36.12.
Versatile sophomore runner
Ezekiel Jere (Tema, Ghana, SOS- Hermann Gmeiner International) outran 19 other runners to win the 800 meters in 1:59.58. His time ranks seventh on the all-time top 10 performance list and fifth on the individual list for the event.
The women's team posted two second place finishes as well -- sophomore
Carolina Goncalves (Chicago, IL, Walter Payton Prep) in the 800 meter run and junior
Colleen Shelly (Galesburg, IL, Galesburg) in the 400 meter hurdles. Shelly recorded a time of 1:13.04 that moves her into 10th place on the all-time top 10 individual list for the 400 hurdles.
Senior
Weston Chenoweth (Canton, IL, Canton) placed in the top five in two events for the Prairie Fire men's team. He was third in the hammer throw with a career-best distance of 146' 4 3/4" that ranks sixth on the all-time top 10 performance and third on the all-time individual lists. Chenoweth also scored in the shot put with a fifth place finish.
The other top performances were from seniors
Devin Compton (Aurora, IL, West Aurora) and
Tim Worrell (Wataga, IL, ROWVA), and sophomore
Brian Cole (Warson Woods, MO, Webster Groves).
Compton was third out of 15 competitors in the shot put with his heave of 42' 1 3/4". Cole placed third out of 13 runners in the 5K with his time of 16:42.73. Worrell threw the discus a personal best 133' 1 1/4" for fourth place out of 17 competitors. His throw is ninth on the all-time top 10 individual list. Worrell added points for Knox with a seventh place finish in the hammer throw.
Host University of Dubuque swept the team standings.
The Knox men finished only seven points behind third place Cornell College (97 points) and 37 points ahead of another Midwest Conference school, Beloit College (53 points).
The Prairie Fire women's team also placed ahead of Beloit (41 points).
Knox competes next in the two-day
Beloit Relays on April 25 and April 26 at Strong Stadium on the Beloit College campus.
