GALESBURG, Illinois - The Prairie Fire baseball team earned a Midwest Conference split with the University of Chicago on Saturday afternoon.
Knox got on the board early when Nicholas Nitti and Jason Clark both doubled in the first inning. Clark knocked in another run with a single in the third inning.
Nitti knocked another double in the fourth inning to bring home Andrew Garrett. Nitti then stole home to give the Prairie Fire a 4-0 lead.
The Maroons tallied three runs in the fifth inning, but Knox added another run in the bottom half on a solo home-run from Henry Scholes.
Starting pitcher Nick Henning pitched into the eighth allowing just one more run, but Chicago tied the game in the top of the ninth.
Garrett singled in the bottom of the 10th inning to bring home Tyler Kemp to walk off game one.
The Maroons scored twice in the first inning of game two, but the Prairie Fire responded with three runs in the bottom half.
Chicago added runs in the second and third, but Knox kept the game close until the Maroons erupted in the seventh inning to earn the win.
Garrett racked up five hits on the day to lead the Prairie Fire. Nitti tallied four hits, while Clark, Scholes, and Kemp added three hits apiece.
"Game one was a great game," said associate head coach James Clark. "We hung in game two, but got some unlucky hops early in the game. We will look to rebound tomorrow."
Knox will battle University of Chicago on April 21 for the final game of the series.
