The women's tennis team won four of five singles matches and added a doubles victory to defeat Monmouth College 5-4 Wednesday evening in a Midwest Conference contest in Monmouth.
The Prairie Fire snapped a two-match losing skid with the win, improving to 2-2 in league play and 3-8 overall.
First-year player Dana Pierce (South Barrington, Illinois) won her fourth straight #1 singles match. She defeated the Fighting Scots' Kimi Wegner 7-5, 6-2. Junior Jordan Kuban (Greeley, Colorado) won her #4 singles match against Kristen Huffman 6-1, 1-6, 7-5. Junior Rachel Clark (Newton, Iowa) picked up her fourth win at #5 after beating Mikaela Rogers 6-1, 6-1 and sophomore Emily Tyl (Downers Grove, Illinois) improved to 6-5 overall in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph against Elizabeth LaFleur in #6 singles.
Monmouth (1-5, 1-3 MWC) won the #2 and #3 singles matches. Ashley Reynoso stopped junior Megan Funk (Springfield, Missouri) in a hard-fought match 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 while senior Molly Stein (Elmhurst, Illinois) wound up on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-1 score against the Scots' Joi Henry.
The Prairie Fire #3 doubles team of Tyl and sophomore Aimee Neilan (Lake in the Hills, Illinois) won their fourth match together, including their third in the #3 doubles slot, by defeating Mikaela Rogers and Danica Rogers of Monmouth 8-4. The Scots won the #1 and #2 doubles matches against Pierce/Funk and Stein/Kuban.
The Knox women's tennis team resumes play Saturday with a pair of matches at Ripon College (9:00 a.m.) and Lawrence University (2:00 p.m.). A non-conference match at St. Ambrose University October 6 is the last regular season event before the MWC Team Tournament steps off October 15 in Rockford, Illinois.
