Doubles Championships Results
DOUBLES CHAMPIONHIPS - October 15, 2011
The Prairie Fire women's team earned five points on Saturday in the Midwest Conference Women's Tennis Doubles Championships.
Senior Megan Funk (Springfield, Missouri) and sophomore Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, Nebraska) -- pictured to the right earlier this season -- won their #1 flight first round match against Monmouth College's Kristen Huffman and Tessa Ginn 6-1, 6-1. Funk and Garvin lost in the quarterfinals to Alyssa Larson and Kate Rasmussen of Carroll University 6-3, 6-0.
The Prairie Fire's #2 flight doubles team of senior Katie Beadling (Portage, Michigan) and senior Jordan Kuban (Greeley, Colorado) dropped their first round match against Constanza Alarcon and Clothilde Thirouin of Grinnell College 6-0, 6-2. The duo from Grinnell moved on to win the #2 doubles championship. Beadling and Kuban swept Monmouth's Amanda Buck and Kortney Rupp 8-0 in the consolation semifinals before falling against Alex Hinck and Maria Mears of Beloit College 8-3 in the consolation championship.
Knox College's #3 doubles team of junior Emily Tyl (Downers Grove, Illinois) and senior Rachel Clark (Newton, Iowa) lost in the quarterfinals to Christina Schaupp and Hannah Geoffrey of Lawrence University 6-3, 6-1. The Vikings team lost in the championship to Toby Cain and Shirlene Luk of Grinnell. Tyl and Clark bounced back to beat Ripon College's Olivia Wetzeland Alison Thies 8-6 in the consolation semifinals, then lost to Ashley Miglin and Emma Beck of Beloit 8-6 in the consolation final.
The Prairie Fire, tied for sixth place with Beloit, tries to move up in the standings during Sunday's singles championships.
The top four places are already set following the Midwest Conference Team Tournament on Friday in Rockford.

Grinnell College won its seventh conference title in the past eight years, and 10th overall, by beating Lawrence University 5-0 in the semifinals and St. Norbert College 5-0 in the championship tilt. The Green Knights advanced to play the Pioneers by defeating Lake Forest College 5-0. Lawrence and Lake Forest tied for third.

The Prairie Fire added 20 points in singles play and finished the tournament with 25 to place sixth overall in the Midwest Conference.
Knox was led by Garvin (pictured to the left earlier this season), who entered the tournament with seven straight victories at #3 singles. She made it eight wins in a row with a victory in the quarterfinals against Alex Hinck of Beloit 6-0, 6-1. Garvin won her semifinals match against St. Norbert College's Callie Schroeder 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the championship against top seed Shirlene Luk of Grinnell College.
Garvin outscored Luk 6-3 in the second set after dropping the first 7-5, setting up the deciding third set. Luk snapped Garvin's streak of nine-straight wins with a 7-5 set victory to earn the conference title in a match that lasted over two hours.
Funk, who lost in the first round to #1 singles champion Elizabeth Larson of Lawrence University, advanced to the consolation finals. Funk downed Monmouth's Kristen Huffman 9-7 in the consolation semifinals before falling to Beloit's Courtney Yates 8-2 for the consolation crown.
Sophomore Dana Pierce (South Barrington, Illinois) also moved through the consolation bracket in singles flight #2. She lost her first round match against St. Norbert's Nancy Chybowski 6-3, 6-3 before bouncing back to beat Maria Mears of Beloit 8-6 in the consolation semifinals. Pierce fell in the consolation championship match against Lawrence University's Jennifer Roesch 8-2.
Kuban earned a hard fought 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 first round win against Lucy Cooper of Lake Forest College in #4 singles. Kuban lost in the quarterfinals to Ariel Bloniarz of St. Norbert 6-2, 6-3.
The other singles champions besides Larson in flight #1 and Luk in flight #3 were Constanza Alarcon of Grinnell College (#2 flight), Christina Schaupp of Lawrence University (#4 flight), Hanna Feldman of Grinnell College (#5 flight), and Polly Dalton of Lawrence University (#6 flight).
