Women's Tennis Beats Ripon, Falls to Carroll

The Prairie Fire wrapped up the home portion of the 2011 schedule with a split Saturday against Ripon College and Carroll University.

Knox began the day by defeating the Red Hawks (3-5) 6-3.  The Prairie Fire won four of the six singles matches and took two of three in doubles play.

Senior Megan Funk (Springfield, Missouri) claimed a hard fought, two set #1 singles win against Ripon's Josie Ullsperger.  Funk took the first set 6-1 before battling to win the second in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3).

Senior Jordan Kuban (Greeley, Colorado) also earned a two set victory in #2 singles against Brittany Sullivan.  Kuban won the first set tiebreaker 7-6 (7-5) before taking the second set 6-3 to post the victory.

Sophomore Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, Nebraska) cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Katie Majerowski in #3 singles.  Senior Katie Beadling (Portage, Michigan) won her #4 singles match against Chloe Piepho 6-1, 6-1.  Ripon posted victories in the #5 and #6 singles matches.

The Prairie Fire won the #1 and #2 doubles matches while the Red Hawks posted a close 9-7 victory in the #3 doubles match.

Funk and Garvin beat Ullsperger and Sullivan 8-2 in #1 doubles while Kuban and Beadling downed Ellie Hedberg and Majerowski 8-4.

The Prairie Fire didn't have the same success against Carroll (6-1), which won 8-1 in the second contest of the day at the Merdian Tennis Courts.

The lone Knox win was in #3 singles as Garvin defeated Kate Rasmussen 6-2, 6-4.  Garvin leads the team with a 5-2 record and has won five straight matches. 

The Prairie Fire owns a 2-5 overall record, including a 1-1 mark in the Midwest Conference South standings.

Knox travels to Augustana College September 30 for a 4:30 p.m. match against the Vikings (5-4 record).  Augie has victories this season against Lake Forest College (6-3) and St. Norbert College (5-4).
