Dubuque, IA – The Prairie Fire couldn’t make it two straight wins to open the spring season on Tuesday at the University of Dubuque.

Despite sweeping the three doubles matches, Knox lost to the Spartans 5-4.

Sophomore Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, NE, Central) picked up where she left off in the fall with a win at #2 singles.  She defeated Lauren Clausen 6-1, 6-1 for her eighth straight singles victory.

Garvin went into the Midwest Conference Women’s Tennis Championships last fall riding a seven match winning streak and earned a second place medal in #3 singles.

Dubuque won the other five singles matches, but not without a fight from the Fire.  Senior Emiley Brand (Princeton, IL, Princeton) and junior Sam Thomas (Algonquin, IL, Jacobs) took their opponents to three sets in the #5 and #6 flights.

Brand won the first set 6-3 before dropping the next two 6-0 and 10-4.  Thomas also won the first set in her match then fell 6-0 and 13-11 in the next two sets.

Garvin and sophomore Dana Pierce (South Barrington, IL, Barrington) won their #1 doubles match 8-3.  The #2 and #3 doubles contests were closer.

Juniors Emily Tyl (Downers Grove, IL, Benet Academy) and Aimee Neilan (Algonquin, IL, Jacobs) got by Dubuque’s #2 doubles team 9-7.  The Fire swept doubles play when Brand and Thomas won the #3 match 8-6.
