Pierce Wins Not Enough for Women's Tennis at Cornell

Mount Vernon, IA – The Prairie Fire lost in its 2012 season and Midwest Conference opening match on September 1 at Cornell College.

The Rams (1-0, 1-0 MWC South), back in the league since leaving at the end of the 1996-97 season, defeated Knox (0-1, 0-1 MWC South) 7-2. 

Prairie Fire junior Dana Pierce (South Barrington, IL, Barrington) had a hand in both of her team’s victories.  She won her #1 singles match against Cornell’s Ariana Hudson 6-4, 2-6, 10-6.  Pierce teamed up with junior Charlotte Garvin (Omaha, NE, Central) to defeat Cornell’s #1 doubles team of Hudson and Samantha De Gannes 8-5.

The Fire’s #3 doubles team of senior Sarah Bolitho (St. Charles, IL, St. Charles East) and junior Emiley Brand (Princeton, IL, Princeton) battled the Rams’ #3 duo of Ellie Purdy and Claudia Landsman.  Cornell came away with an 8-6 win in the doubles contest.

Knox travels to St. Norbert College on September 7 for a non-conference match against the Green Knights.  St.Norbert lost its season opener at home against Lake Forest College 6-3 on August 31.
